More than a month has passed since Scotty Scarberry was last seen, and questions remain about what happened to the man whose disappearance led investigators to Buchanan County and an abandoned mine in the Paw Paw area.
Scarberry was last reported seen July 13. As of press time, he remains missing, more than four weeks after family members first became concerned about his whereabouts.
The Kentucky State Police have been investigating Scarberry’s disappearance and previously asked anyone with information that could help locate him to come forward.
Scarberry had reportedly been staying on his uncle’s property in Kentucky before telling family members he planned to travel to Southwest Virginia to explore abandoned mines.
The investigation eventually led authorities to Buchanan County after information surfaced that Scarberry may have entered an abandoned mine in the Paw Paw section of the county.
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Virginia Department of Energy’s Mines Rescue Team. The mine entrance was excavated and searched, but authorities reported finding no sign of Scarberry.
Since then, no information has been released indicating that Scarberry has been located.
Scarberry previously gained national attention under the nickname “Huck Finn” after he and his dog, Creedy, survived Hurricane Helene near Tybee Island, Georgia, in September 2024. Scarberry had been living aboard a sailboat when the storm struck, and the pair’s survival story was reported by news outlets across the country.
His family previously expressed concern that Scarberry left Creedy behind before his disappearance, something relatives said was unusual for him.
With more than a month now passed since Scarberry was last seen, authorities continue to seek information that could help determine his whereabouts.
