Harold R. Boyd of Whitewood, a 35-year-old insurance agent and Buchanan County’s Republican Chairman, and Douglas Hess, a 33-year-old Certified Public Accountant of Tazewell, were nominated as the GOP candidates for the two seats in the Virginia House of Delegates from the Third Legislative District, representing the counties of Buchanan, Tazewell and Russell.
Earl E. Dellinger, a Grundy auto dealer, has announced himself as a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates from the three-county district comprising Buchanan, Tazewell and Russell counties.

Grundy Junior High Cheerleaders received an improvement ribbon during the final day of competition at Pikeville College Cheerleading Camp that was held August 2-7 on the college campus. The Grundy Junior High School Cheerleading squad consisted of Terrena Dotson, Mindy Carter, Kaye Rife, Greta Mullins, Traci Hall, Sarah Mullins and Sara Rash.
David A. Hoagland, Pastor of Vansant Baptist Church, Vansant, received the Doctor of Divinity Degree from Covington Theological Seminary, Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., at the annual commencement. Dr. Hoagland is married to the former Mildred L. Thompson, and they have two children, Scott and Jessica.

Two county students have received scholarships, and another recently graduated from Virginia Intermont College in Bristol. Tina Lynn Prater of Hurley recently received an Achievement Scholarship from VI. Prater is also the recipient of an Academic Excellence Scholarship and has been named to the college’s dean’s list. Rebecca McClellan of Grundy has been awarded a Presidential Scholarship. The scholarship provides McClellan with a full tuition award.
The Alpha Xi chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International remembered its beloved sister, Maudie Ward, with a stately transition ceremony at the Buchanan County Funeral Home on July 30. President Mary Salyer presided at the service, honoring her very special friend and teaching associate who taught first grade at Whitewood for 30 years.
Linda Justus, band director at Hurley High, sang a praise hymn at the opening of the service. Janice Farmer sang The Lord’s Prayer, and Shelby McClanahan sang Amazing Grace.

Irena Childress, a junior at Grundy High School, has been named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students for the second consecutive year. She has also been selected as a member of the National Honor Roll. Her biography will appear in each of the national publications. She is the daughter of Warren and Diane Childress of Vansant.
Luke Owens has been number one before. — A three-time state champion wrestler in high school. — The 1997 Junior National freestyle wrestling champion. — A first-team all-state football star.
But never has the former Grundy wrestling and football standout sounded more excited than when he reached number one on the depth chart at the left guard position for the 9th-ranked college football team in the country.
After two seasons as a key backup in the offensive line and a special teams player at Virginia Tech, Owens is expected to open the season at left guard when the Hokies open the season at home on September 1 against Connecticut.
