Buford C. (Pete) Sturgill, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Sturgill of Grundy, recently was promoted to the grade of Air Force staff sergeant while serving in Saigon, Vietnam. Sturgill is with a combat support refueling squadron. Sturgill was stationed in Goose Bay, Labrador and in Thailand.
Five young people from Buchanan County, all former students at Grundy Senior High School, have been named to the Dean’s List at Berea College for the second semester of 1965-1966, the college announced this week. Students honored were Lille Mae Shortridge, Earnest Gary Raines, Linda Sue Hagy, Curtis Deel and James Cecil Owens.

Miss Vickie Dotson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Burton Dotson, gets to ride on a camel’s back as she and nine other Grundy residents tour the Holy Land. The students and Mrs. Lawrence Lindsey, a teacher at Grundy Senior High, have also been touring Europe and the Mediterranean and are in London this week as their 11-day tour nears an end. Mrs. P.L. Williams, a volunteer at Buchanan General Hospital, has earned her 1,000-hour Service Pin. Mrs. Virginia Spraker, Director of Volunteer Services, presented the honor. Mrs. Williams is also a devoted member of the Grundy United Methodist Church and a substitute teacher in Buchanan County schools. She was born and raised in this county.
Delegate Donald A. McGlothlin of Grundy and William P. Green of Lebanon announced today that they will seek re-election to the Virginia House of Delegates, subject to the will of the Third Legislative Democratic Convention. Delegate McGlothlin will be seeking his eighth term in the Virginia House of Delegates.
He serves on the following committees in the House: General Laws, Courts of Justice, Roads and Internal Navigation and is in line to become Chairman of the Mining and Minerals Committee.

Last year’s Lady Wave standout Brooke Shepherd made it official this week that she has decided to continue her basketball career at Division I program the University of Alabama-Birmingham. Shepherd, a rising senior, also announced that she will be returning to Bristol next year to play at Virginia High.

In the Teen Miss category, Celisha Shantel Allen, second from right, was named Teen Miss Buchanan County Fair. Jodi Samantha Paige Jones was chosen as first runner-up; Jodie Nikole Jackson, second runner-up; and Kendra Endicott, third runner-up. Amanda Dawn Burks, second from right, was crowned Young Miss Buchanan County Fair. First runner-up was Brianna Graham; second runner-up was Lindsay Branham; and third runner-up was Emily Rena McClanahan.
