Summer may bring a break from the classroom, but for many young basketball players in Buchanan County, it’s also an opportunity to sharpen their skills before the next season begins.
The Buchanan County YMCA invites boys and girls entering second through eighth grade to participate in its annual Co-Ed Youth Summer Basketball Camp, scheduled for July 29-31.
The three-day camp will be led by Southern Gap High School varsity boys basketball head coach Jory Rife and is designed to provide young athletes with a fun, encouraging environment where they can improve their basketball fundamentals, build confidence and make new friends.
Each day will begin with a devotional before campers take part in instruction covering ball handling, shooting, defensive pressure, layups, agility and game situations. Players will also have opportunities to apply what they learn through daily competitions and scrimmages.
The camp is open to players of all experience levels, whether they are learning the fundamentals of the game or preparing for the upcoming school basketball season.
Sessions will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day at the Buchanan County YMCA.
In addition to basketball instruction, every participant will receive a camp T-shirt, a pool pass and a snow cone pass. Daily awards will be presented throughout the camp, and one participant will be named Camper of the Week and receive a complimentary one-year YMCA membership.
Registration is now open. The cost is $75 for YMCA members, with each additional sibling costing $60. For non-members, the fee is $95, with additional siblings costing $80 each.
For more information or to register, parents may contact the Buchanan County YMCA at (276) 935-8871.
