Buchanan County Public Schools reported 2,047 students in kindergarten through 12th grade during the opening month of the 2026-27 academic year, with another 103 children enrolled in pre-K.
Superintendent Sherry Fletcher presented the enrollment and attendance update to the Buchanan County School Board during its Sept. 15 meeting at the Government Center on Slate Creek.
The August report covered seven school days through Aug. 31. Including pre-K, the division served 2,150 students across its five schools.
Southern Gap High School had the largest enrollment with 798 students in grades eight through 12. That included 182 eighth graders, 144 ninth graders, 158 10th graders, 160 11th graders and 154 seniors.
Riverview Elementary/Middle School enrolled 642 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Its enrollment included 88 kindergarteners, 93 first graders, 69 second graders, 77 third graders, 86 fourth graders, 66 fifth graders, 103 sixth graders and 60 seventh graders. The school also had 66 pre-K students.
Hurley Elementary/Middle School reported 231 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. The school had 35 kindergarteners, 26 first graders, 35 second graders, 20 third graders, 42 fourth graders, 29 fifth graders, 20 sixth graders and 24 seventh graders. An additional 10 children were enrolled in pre-K.
Twin Valley Elementary/Middle School had 222 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Grade counts included 38 kindergarteners, 25 first graders, 24 second graders, 33 third graders, 26 fourth graders, 27 fifth graders, 29 sixth graders and 20 seventh graders. The school also enrolled 16 pre-K students.
Council Elementary/Middle School reported 154 students in kindergarten through seventh grade. Enrollment included 19 kindergarteners, 13 first graders, 12 second graders, 30 third graders, 10 fourth graders, 30 fifth graders, 18 sixth graders and 22 seventh graders. Another 11 children attended pre-K.
The division reported an average attendance rate of 95.29% for August.
Southern Gap led the five schools with an attendance rate of 97.29%. Council followed at 95.92%, while Twin Valley reported 94.64%, Riverview recorded 94.54% and Hurley posted 94.04%.
Each school reported attendance above 94% during the opening seven days of the academic year.
