Southern Gap placed third in a seven-team Southwest District golf match, firing a team score of 169 behind Graham and Marion.

The Eagles had three golfers shoot 42 or better, led by Ethan Deel and Jaxon Hardin with rounds of 41. Braden Hopkins was one stroke back with a 42.

Mason Boyd and Ben Mayhew each carded a 45, while Wyatt Street rounded out the Southern Gap lineup with a 50.

Only four scores counted toward the team total. Deel’s 41, Hardin’s 41, Hopkins’ 42 and a 45 from either Boyd or Mayhew gave the Eagles their 169. The other 45 and Street’s 50 were outside Southern Gap’s four counting scores.

Graham won the team competition with a 141, followed by Marion at 162. Southern Gap was seven strokes behind Marion in third place.

Lebanon finished fourth at 184, followed by Virginia High at 189, Richlands at 199 and Tazewell at 204.

Marion’s Campbell Sayers earned medalist honors with a 31. Graham’s Bailey Goodson and Noah Mulkey tied for second with rounds of 34, while Graham’s Brogan Gilpin followed with a 36.

Graham’s Colton Graham and Marion’s Brady White each shot 37, while Graham’s Kendal Brodnik finished with a 38.

Four golfers tied at 41 — Southern Gap’s Deel and Hardin, Marion’s Hayes Hall and Virginia High’s Carter Gemmell — creating a four-way tie beginning in eighth place.

Southern Gap’s third-place showing continued the Eagles’ inaugural season as they compete for the first time as a member of the Southwest District.
