Led by freshman sensation Katelyn Wolford’s runner-up performance, the Southern Gap girls cross country team earned second place Sept. 2 at the SWVA High/Middle Cross Country Rumble.
The Eagles finished with 34 points, trailing only Wise Central, which won the team championship with 22. Southern Gap placed five runners among the top 14 in the 5,000-meter race.
Eastside produced the individual champion and had three runners among the top seven, but it did not have the five finishers required to record a team score. Jenkins also did not field enough runners to qualify for the team standings.
Wise Central placed five scoring runners among the top 10, allowing the Warriors to earn the team championship. Southern Gap countered with a balanced performance, placing two runners among the top eight and four among the top 12.
Wolford led the Eagles by placing second with a time of 22 minutes, 13 seconds. She finished 31 seconds behind Eastside sophomore Allie Salyer, who won the race in 21:42.
Southern Gap senior Kelly Ratliff also earned a top-10 finish, placing eighth in 25:59.
