Southern Gap continued to make its presence felt during its inaugural golf season, placing third in a Southwest District match Wednesday, Aug. 26, in Marion.
The Eagles posted a four-player team score of 169, finishing behind district champion Graham and runner-up Marion.
Graham won the match with a 149, while Marion finished seven strokes back with a 156. Southern Gap followed in third, with Richlands placing fourth at 190, Virginia High fifth at 193 and Lebanon sixth at 218. Tazewell did not have enough golfers to record a team score.
Mason Boyd led Southern Gap with a 37, tying for the third-lowest round of the match. Jaxon Hardin followed with a 40, giving the Eagles two golfers among the top 10 individuals.
Brayden Hopkins shot a 45, while Ben Mayhew finished with a 47. Gavin Hartford carded a 49, and Jackson Deel added a 50.
Graham’s Brogan Gilpin earned medalist honors after firing a match-low 35. Teammate Bailey Goodson finished one stroke back with a 36.
Boyd tied Marion’s Campbell Sayers and Brady White with rounds of 37. Tazewell’s Jay Sawyers followed with a 38.
Graham’s Noah Mulkey and Kendal Brodnik joined Marion’s Hayes Hall at 39. Hardin rounded out the top 10 with his 40.
The third-place showing gave Southern Gap another strong performance in its first season as the Eagles continue competing against some of Southwest Virginia’s established golf programs.
