With 15 lettermen returning, Coach Jack Brown said he hopes to improve on last year’s dismal 1-7 season. Brown, along with assistants Kermit Rife and John Stewart Justus, said that the attitude among the youthful aspirants for starting berths is good, and that this factor alone should mean an improvement in play.
Army Private First Class Robert E. Clifton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter L. Clifton, Pilgrims Knob, was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam on July 26. Clifton is a 21-year-old soldier who graduated from Whitewood High School in 1963.

Miss Lisa Lester was crowned Miss Local Union 1640 on Saturday night at the Local Union 1640 Coal Miner’s Daughter Beauty Pageant held at Vansant Elementary School. Lisa is the 17-year-old daughter of William Lester of Council and was sponsored by Dennie Tiller. The first runner-up was Anna Hess, a 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Coy Hess, and the second runner-up was Tamara Rowe, a 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Rowe.
Mr. Neal Cox, son of Mr. and Mrs. William (Mack) Cox of Grundy, is a recipient of the Hugh Scott Taylor Award in Chemistry at Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey. This award is presented to the four most qualified graduate students entering the Doctoral Program in the Department of Chemistry. Neal attended Grundy Senior High School, where he graduated salutatorian in the Class of 1970.

Grundy Senior High School graduates Brent Osborne and Shauna Hurley recently received U.S. Army Reserve Scholar Athlete awards for their high school accomplishments. Both Osborne and Hurley will continue their education at colleges this fall. Staff Sgt. Moreland presented the awards.
Members of the Garden Green Dragons girls’ basketball team for the 1996 season are Kristi Bartley, Shelly Blankenship, Janice Coleman, Kristy Boyd, Greta Whitt, Susie Garrick, Tina Stanley, Brandi Davis, Wendy Meadows, and Rhonda Vance. Head coach Danny Rasnake leads the team.

Tonya Davis Plaster graduated May 14, 2001, from the Campbell University School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Plaster graduated as valedictorian of Garden High School in 1993 and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Clinch Valley College in 1997. A former Oakwood resident, she is the daughter of Jack and Sharon Davis of Oakwood. She and her husband, Scott, now live in Cedar Bluff.
Stoney Hale added to an already impressive resume by capturing his fourth “Tough Man” championship in the middleweight division of the Tri-Cities Tough Man Contest on August 18 at Viking Hall. Buchanan County’s resident tough man – who has won three tough man titles in West Virginia – won four bouts in the event, which was sanctioned by the Tennessee Boxing Association.
