Fans attending athletic events on Buchanan County Public Schools property must leave traditional bags at home under a new safety policy taking effect this school year.
Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, all athletic events held on school division property will require clear bags.
The policy applies to more than middle and high school sporting events. Spectators attending Little League games and other community athletic events on school property must also follow the requirement.
School officials said the change is intended to improve safety and security for students, athletes, employees, families and other community members. It will also create one consistent bag policy for athletic venues throughout the division.
The new requirement means fans should check their belongings before leaving for a game and make sure any bag they carry into the venue is clear. The school division’s notice did not provide specific size requirements or list exceptions to the policy.
The division is asking families and visitors to cooperate with school employees as everyone adjusts to the change during the season’s opening weeks.
School officials said the goal is to keep athletic events safe while continuing to provide a welcoming environment for students and the community.
