A historic new chapter in Buchanan County education will be celebrated later this month when Southern Gap High School holds its official ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house.
The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 29, at 10:30 a.m. at the new school, located at 2021 Eagle Drive in the Southern Gap section of Buchanan County.
The event will give students, families and community members an opportunity to gather and celebrate the completion of a 200,000-square-foot school that will bring together students from across Buchanan County under one roof.
Southern Gap High School is opening for the 2026-27 academic year following the closure of Council, Grundy, Hurley and Twin Valley high schools. The new school will serve students in grades eight through 12 and become Buchanan County’s only high school.
For generations, the county’s communities cheered for their own teams and built traditions inside their local schools. Southern Gap now begins the process of bringing those histories together while creating a new identity as the home of the Eagles.
The ribbon-cutting will formally recognize the opening of the new school and the years of planning, construction and work that went into making the project a reality. The open house will also allow residents to see the completed facility and experience the new educational setting created for the county’s students.
Southern Gap’s first official school day is Friday, Aug. 21, making the Aug. 29 ceremony another milestone during the school’s historic opening year.
