As summer vacation begins to wind down, young basketball players across Buchanan County will have one more chance to hit the court, learn new skills and prepare for the upcoming season during the Buchanan County YMCA’s annual Co-Ed Youth Summer Basketball Camp.
The three-day camp kicked off this Wednesday and will conclude on Friday. The camp was designed for boys and girls entering the second through eighth grades.
Leading the camp will be Southern Gap High School varsity boys basketball head coach Jory Rife, who will help campers strengthen the fundamentals of the game while emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship and having fun.
Each morning will begin with a devotional before players move into skill instruction covering ball handling, shooting, defensive techniques, layups, agility drills and game situations. Campers will also have opportunities to put those lessons into action through scrimmages and friendly competitions.
Whether a child is picking up a basketball for the first time or looking to fine-tune their game before school starts, the camp is designed to help players of all skill levels improve while building confidence on and off the court.
Camp sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day at the Buchanan County YMCA.
In addition to basketball instruction, every camper will receive a camp T-shirt, a pool pass and a snow cone pass. Daily awards will be presented throughout the week, and one participant will be recognized as Camper of the Week and will earn a complimentary one-year YMCA membership.
The cost for the three-day camp is $75 for YMCA members, with each additional sibling costing $60. For non-members, the fee is $95, with additional siblings costing $80 each.
