Have you ever wanted to respond? Have you ever wanted to audition, but were unsure what to expect or how to make a good impression on the casting committee? Well, this article was written especially for you.
As someone who has been on both sides of the casting table (and could be on the casting committee in the CAM’s upcoming show), I am here to provide you with some helpful tips to put your best foot forward.
First, preparation calms the nerves. If you want to make a good impression on the casting committee, do as much research as you can about the target production. If the show is not well-known, reach out to the director and ask for an overview.
After you have done your research, put yourself in the casting committee’s shoes. What role best fits you? Your nerves will be easier to control if you are convinced you fit into the show.
There is nothing wrong with being open to any role (in fact, we like that), but preparing in this way will provide you with the confidence you need to wow the committee.
Second, be thoughtful when picking an audition piece. Most directors will allow you to prepare a monologue or song to show off your talent. It is imperative that you pick an audition piece that highlights the qualities of the character for which you are auditioning. Often actors will prepare monologues that do nothing to inform the casting committee on how to cast them in the upcoming production.
This is a missed opportunity. Even the way you dress for auditions can help you in securing the part you desire. Trust me, you have already won half the battle if the casting committee can visualize you in your preferred role and/or the production itself.
Finally, be open to the process. On the day of auditions, the casting committee will likely have you read for multiple parts, which is a great opportunity to showcase your full capabilities. Be versatile, follow direction, and, most of all, enjoy yourself.
The majority of an actor’s career is auditioning. Auditioning is an art in and of itself. The more you do it, the better you become at it, and, surprisingly, the more you love it. For this reason, you should never be discouraged by not receiving a particular role. Every audition is an opportunity to polish your skills, no matter the outcome.
