For generations, canning has been a way of life in Buchanan County, helping families preserve the fruits and vegetables they grow throughout the summer. Next week, local youth will have the opportunity to learn those same traditions during the Buchanan County 4-H Canning Day Camp.
The free event will be held Wednesday, July 8, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Buchanan County Extension Office, located at 4313 Slate Creek Road in Grundy.
Open to youth ages 9-18, the camp will provide hands-on instruction in the basics of home canning and food preservation. Participants will learn safe canning practices while discovering a skill that has long been part of Appalachian heritage.
Organizers hope the camp will not only teach practical kitchen skills but also encourage young people to appreciate the value of preserving fresh foods and carrying on traditions that have been passed down through generations.
The event is sponsored by the Buchanan County Extension Office through Virginia Cooperative Extension and is free to attend.
Space is limited, and participants are encouraged to register in advance by calling the Buchanan County Extension Office at (276) 935-5093.

The camp is one of several educational programs offered by Buchanan County 4-H throughout the year to help young people develop practical life skills while having fun in a hands-on learning environment.
