CHRISTINE HESS ELSWICK, age 92, of Abingdon, went to be with the Lord peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.
Christine was born to Walter and Ethel Herndon on March 16, 1934 in Logan, WV. After lovingly raising her children, Christine pursued her passion for caring for others and earned her Licensed Practical Nurse degree. She also was the owner and operator of Anderson Trailer Park for 42 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Ethel Herndon; husbands, Dr. Ralph W. Hess and Jay C. Elswick; son, Ralph W. Hess Jr.; 1 infant grandson; 1 infant great-grandson; and 7 siblings.
Christine’s greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her children, Curtis Hess (Eleanor), Danny Hess, Sam Hess (Chandra), Cindy Jackson (Don), Candy Blankenship (Mike), Sandy Whittington (Jeff), “adopted son”, David Phillips (Lucille), and 1 step-daughter, Robin Justus (Randy); 16 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; and 1 brother, Carl D. Herndon (Helen); and many dear nieces and nephews.
In the words of her oldest grandson, Matt: “What a wonderful life to have lived. No matter how long you have with someone it never seems long enough. 92 years of loving and watching over all of us had to be exhausting at times. You somehow had enough love for each and every one of us and I hope you felt the love we all had for you.”
