A Buchanan County man was arrested Monday evening after allegedly fleeing the scene of a vehicle crash and leaving four children behind in the wrecked vehicle.
According to the Kentucky State Police, troopers were dispatched to the Mouthcard community around 7 p.m. after a small child entered a local store and reported being involved in a crash. The child also told store employees that a man was bleeding.
When troopers arrived, they located the crashed vehicle on South River Road and found four children inside.
The driver, identified as Ryan Wilson, 37, of Maxie, had reportedly left the scene on foot following the crash. Troopers later located Wilson walking approximately 1.5 miles from the accident site.
Police said Wilson did not provide a clear explanation for leaving the scene but stated that he was nervous and wanted the children to be safe.
After transporting Wilson back to the crash scene, troopers reportedly detected the odor of alcohol. According to police, Wilson admitted to consuming a 16-ounce Bud Light and a 12-ounce Twisted Tea.
Wilson was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, failure to render aid, endangering the welfare of a minor, first-degree wanton endangerment and operating a vehicle without a license.
The incident remains under investigation by the Kentucky State Police.
