Judge Glyn R. Phillips of Buchanan County Circuit Court has successfully completed a two-week graduate program at the National College of the State Judiciary in Reno, NV. The course entitled “The Role of the Judge in the Trial of a Lawsuit” was held from August 8 to August 20.
James W. McGlothlin, an attorney in Grundy, will be the guest speaker at the regular meeting of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce to be held tonight (Thursday) at 7 p.m. at the Dixie Cafeteria. McGlothlin will speak on the new mine laws and their effect on the economy in Buchanan County.

Tonight (Thursday) will be “Pete Dixon Night” at the regular monthly meeting of the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce to be held at 7 p.m. in the Dixie Cafeteria. E.E. “Pete” Dixon, Grundy Fire Chief for 29 years, will be the Chamber’s guest of honor and will be recognized for his outstanding service to the people of Grundy and Buchanan County.
Barbara Edwards of Grundy is the winner of last week’s Mountaineer Football contest. Barbara missed only three of the nineteen picks to claim first prize. Joyce McComas of Hurley and Orville Walsh of Grundy tied for second with just four wrong picks.

Bobbie Nickole Pugh, daughter of Bob and Inez Pugh of Grundy, has been named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Her biography will be published in the 25th anniversary edition of the publication.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has announced that Vicki Stiltner has agreed to be the coordinator of the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Bike-A-Thon in Grundy on October 5. St Jude Children’s Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas.

A resolution asking the Virginia Department of Transportation Commonwealth Transportation Board to name Rt. 643 the “Julius Hall Memorial Roadway” was adopted last Thursday by the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors. The resolution asks that the roadway—beginning at Rt. 83 on Slate Creek and ending at the Kentucky State Line — to be named in honor of Hall, a former Knox District Supervisor.
Grundy made it two wins in as many tries by easing past county rival Hurley, 68-34, in a non-district contest Sept. 4 at Grundy High School. Erin Scott recorded a double-double with a game-high 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Golden Wave. Sophomore Lauren Fletcher also scored 14 points for Grundy (2-0). Amelia Thomas paced Hurley (1-1) with 12 points.
