Southern Gap High School’s new athletic facility is drawing college basketball to Buchanan County, with the University of Pikeville men’s team scheduled to hold its Orange and Black scrimmage at the school Thursday, Oct. 22.
The visit also brings UPike head coach Tigh Compton back to his home county. Compton was born and raised in Buchanan County and graduated from Grundy High School.
For local fans, the evening offers an opportunity to watch the Bears close to home while supporting Southern Gap’s young athletes.
Activities begin at 6 p.m. with a girls middle school basketball game between Southern Gap and Tazewell. UPike’s Orange and Black scrimmage follows at 7 p.m. Admission is $5.
Billed as an “On the Road” event, the intrasquad scrimmage will feature UPike players competing against one another as they prepare for the upcoming season.
The Bears’ visit offers an early example of how Southern Gap’s state-of-the-art facility can serve the wider community, bringing college basketball to the new campus alongside the school’s own athletic programs.
