An evening of shopping, fellowship and shared experiences brought women together Thursday, Oct. 8, at the Buchanan County Public Library, with a serious purpose behind the gathering – raising awareness of breast cancer.
The Grundy Woman’s Club sponsored its annual Ladies Night Out, a free event offering education, encouragement and support during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Club President Bertha Street said the evening was a success, thanking guest speakers Frannie Minton and Diana Cantrell, along with the businesses, organizations and others who helped make it possible.
“It was a great event to give attention to a serious illness, Breast Cancer,” Street said.
Breast cancer survivors were among those attending, and remarks from women in the audience added a personal connection to the evening’s awareness efforts.
Representatives from the Appalachian College of Pharmacy were on hand to provide health checkups. Buchanan General Hospital, the Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District, local banks and other community organizations and businesses also set up at the event, offering information, free handouts and giveaway items.
Alongside the speakers and discussion, guests enjoyed shopping provided by Grace Boutique. Door prizes, games and light refreshments gave those attending a chance to visit with one another while supporting the event’s purpose.
Street said the club was proud to help bring attention to breast cancer and thanked everyone who contributed to this year’s gathering. The club encouraged residents to watch for next October’s event and participate in its other community activities.
The club’s next seasonal shopping event, Holidays in the Hills, is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the second floor of the Appalachian School of Law’s Booth Center, 1195 Edgewater Drive in Grundy.
Shoppers will find handmade gifts, seasonal decorations and treats from local vendors, offering an opportunity to get an early start on Christmas shopping while supporting the club’s community efforts.
Admission is $5. Children younger than 5 will be admitted free.
