Oct 7, 1971

The junior class of Hurley High School met September 24th in the school auditorium and nominated candidates for officers, who were elected on Monday, September 27th. Elected were Joann Mullins, president; Diana Johnson, vice president; Terrie Tester, secretary-treasurer; Diana Helton, reporter and SCA Representative; Ronnie Stiltner. The meeting also covered class dues and ideas for raising money for prom and the senior trip.

Hurley Rebels tailback Teddy Hipps led a last-minute one-person campaign in the fourth period, scoring his second touchdown of the night on a 60-yard run to turn a two-point Hurley deficit into a 12-8 victory over Haysi in football action Friday night at Haysi.

45 YEARS AGO

October 8, 1981

Garden Elementary held its Little Miss Pageants last week in the high school gym. Little Miss Kindergarten is Lisa Perkins, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eulys Perkins. First runner-up was Stephenie Hinkle, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Monroe Hinkle. Second runner-up was Christine Shortridge, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Shortridge. Pam Clendenin was chosen as Little Miss GES. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Clendenin. Barbara Clendenin, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Clendenin, placed first, and Melinda Dye, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Quinton Dye, was second runner-up. The new Little Miss Garden Elementary is Laura Proffit. First runner-up was Debbie Blankenship, and Michelle Ramsey was second runner-up.

Grundy Wavettes pulled out a close one with Tazewell Thursday night to take a 59-52 decision in Southwest District girls basketball play. Kelly Vandyke made 19 points for the Wavettes, and Tracy Fletcher was credited with 18 points and 21 rebounds in the win.

35 YEARS AGO

October 10, 1991

Buchanan County voters have a choice in all constitutional offices up for grabs on Nov. 5, except Commonwealth Attorney. Both Democrat and Republican candidates have announced for each office voters have to consider. In the Circuit Court Clerk race, Democrat James M. “Jim” Bunn will square off against Republican candidate Phillip C. Justice.

Jill Suzanne Viers has been nominated for inclusion in the 25th annual edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students. Jill is a senior at Grundy Senior High School and is the daughter of Cecil and Eula Viers of Vansant.

Council won both the boys’ and girls’ meet in BDD cross country action Wednesday afternoon at William P. Harris Park in Council. Shannon Breeding won the boys’ meet in 18:43, while Haley Arrington led the girls’ meet in 22:28. Council claimed the top five boys’ spots and eight of the top nine. Among the girls, Council claimed four of the top nine spots, edging Haysi in team points.

Twin Valley picked up its first BDD win in four tries and evened its overall record at 5-5 with a five-set victory over Council Tuesday evening at Council Elementary School. A consistent service game, led by senior Carrie Mounts, carried Twin Valley. Mounts got nine straight points to lead the Lady Panters to a win in game one.
