Buchanan County first responders and others who may encounter livestock during highway emergencies have an opportunity to attend free training on Oct. 15 in Clintwood.
The Bovine Emergency Response Plan training will begin at 8 a.m. at the Coalfield Agriculture Center, 449 Agriculture Drive. The program is free and includes lunch, but registration is required.
The training is designed to help emergency personnel safely approach and handle highway accidents involving livestock and the vehicles transporting them. Such incidents can leave responders dealing with loose or injured animals while also managing an accident scene.
The program is intended to reach law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical services personnel, animal control officers, veterinarians and others involved in emergency responses.
Continuing education credits are available, including seven hours for law enforcement officers, four hours for veterinarians and eight hours for animal control officers. Credits are also available for fire and EMS personnel.
Virginia Farm Bureau’s safety program and the Virginia Cattle Industry Board sponsor the event.
