Four Southern Gap runners finished within 23 seconds of one another on Sept. 23 in North Tazewell, helping the Eagles place second in the boys’ 5,000-meter race at the George Brown Invitational.
Sophomore Ethan Deel led Southern Gap with a fourth-place finish in 19:59.92 at Cavitts Creek Park. Freshman Bentley Jackson followed in sixth at 20:04.99. Sophomore Wyatt Street placed seventh in 20:22.45, just ahead of freshman teammate Kyler Lester, who was eighth in 20:22.74.
Freshman Oliver Breeding completed the Eagles’ scoring five, placing 23rd in 23:04.80. Sophomore Jaccob Smeltzer finished 25th in 23:37.21, and junior Westen Deel placed 35th in 41:09.26.
Southern Gap scored 40 points, eight behind the first-place Virginia Bearcats. Carroll County and Tazewell each scored 75, with Carroll County listed third in the meet results.
The Virginia High Bearcats claimed the first three individual places. Junior Liam Pratt won in 18:14.09, followed by freshman Timothe Regin in 19:06.04 and junior Alex Kariuki in 19:50.35. Carroll County’s Avery Jones was fifth in 20:04.73, finishing just ahead of Jackson.
Southern Gap also placed second in the boys’ middle school 3,000-meter team race. Eighth grader Dacen Anglin led the Eagles, placing 10th in 13:34.83. Eighth grader Edward Stiltner was 13th in 14:34.11, seventh grader Colten Crouse placed 17th in 14:53.36, and fifth grader Malachi Hall finished 18th in 14:56.99.
Seventh grader Wilson Tanudjaya placed 23rd in 15:17.66, followed by sixth grader Wesley Tanudjaya in 24th at 15:19.23. Fifth grader Easton Stevens was 28th in 15:38.09. Fifth grader Brayden Yates finished 34th in 17:05.50, fourth grader Evan Mullins was 48th in 19:51.75, and fifth grader Alex Dailey placed 54th in 22:41.23.
Carroll County won the middle school team race with 36 points. Southern Gap scored 53, followed by Tazewell with 59 and Richlands with 72.
