Miss Linda Childers of Abingdon is now working with the expanding nutrition program being conducted by the Buchanan County Extension Office. A graduate of Radford College, Miss Childers worked with the 4-H Community Resource Development pilot project in Abingdon this summer.
The Grundy Golden Wave, led by a four-touchdown performance from junior halfback Tim Elswick, picked up their first victory of the season, a stunning 31-14 win over old foe Richlands Friday night. Garden, also on the road, turned back Twin Springs convincingly, 26-0, and Hurley dropped their fourth game, 36-to-6, at Rye Cove.

The Garden Green Dragons JV defeated Pocahontas Indians 38-0 Monday night at Pocahontas. The Dragons, 3-1 so far this season, used a balanced attack to totally dominate the Indians. The offense, led by running backs Greg Street, Bill Mills and John Sisk, put up 250-plus yards rushing and 100-plus yards passing, with quarterback Hub McClanahan tossing to Jeff Looney and Mike Lester.
Grundy’s Wavettes, led by Tracy Fletcher, scored an impressive 33 points to defeat Whitewood’s Lady Indians Monday night, 89-29, in girls’ basketball. The Wavettes, leading the Southwest District, dominated the Black Diamond District team throughout. Fletcher also brought down 18 rebounds.

The Whitewood High School FHA attended camp this summer at the FFA-FHA Camp. Four students, including Michelle Cooper, Stephanie Ratliff, Eva Vencill and Kim Viers, attended the camp. Also attending was the group’s sponsor, Verona Dudley.
Three Buchanan County Girl Scout officials were among the area scout leaders attending the Quality Sales Program, Training and Luncheon on September 10 at the Sheraton in Bluefield. Representatives from Buchanan County who attended were Jean Vandyke, Jenifer Slone and Becky Raines.

Former Buchanan County Board of Supervisors member Roger Rife was selected by Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore to receive the Patrick Henry Award, recognizing his service to Buchanan County and the commonwealth. According to a letter from Gilmore, the award honors Rife’s commitment to and passion for sound government. Rife represented the South Grundy District and served as chairman of the Board of Supervisors.
Brit Coleman scored every point and accounted for most of the yardage as Twin Valley knocked off Pocahontas 22-8 in non-district football action Friday night at Pocahontas. Coleman carried the ball 23 times for 196 yards and scored all three Panthers touchdowns. The senior tailback also ran for a pair of two-point conversions for Twin Valley (3-1), which spoiled Pocahontas’ homecoming and handed the Indians their third consecutive loss.
