A new farmers market at Southern Gap officially opened Sept. 17 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by local officials, organizers and community supporters.
The Farmers Market at Southern Gap is located behind the large Southern Gap sign atop Lovers Gap, near the turn onto Southern Gap Road.
For now, the market will be open each Thursday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., providing residents and visitors with another opportunity to support local growers and producers.
“The farmers market will provide a place for people to trade and sell garden vegetables, honey, fresh eggs, etc.,” Prater District Supervisor David Rose said. “We are excited to get this going for the county.”
Rose said vendors will not be charged to participate in the market.
“There will be no charge to set up at the farmers market,” Rose said. “A big thank you goes out to Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation for providing this opportunity for the community of Buchanan County.”
Representatives of the Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District joined county and economic development officials for the ribbon-cutting.
Those attending included Josh McGlothlin, chairman of the Big Sandy Soil and Water Conservation District, and Bobby Looney, a member of its board. Associate directors Leona Wolford and Virginia Looney also represented the district.
Rose represented the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors, while Pete Stiltner represented the Buchanan County Industrial Development Authority.
Brooke Charles, Glenn St. Clair, Angel St. Clair and Harold Deel were also among those attending the ceremony.
The market’s location at Southern Gap makes it easily accessible to residents traveling through the area while also providing another attraction for visitors to the growing recreation and tourism destination.
