Southern Gap passed another early test Wednesday night, defeating Graham 3-1 for its second Southwest District victory in as many nights.
The Eagles entered the match less than 24 hours after sweeping Virginia High in Bristol in the program’s first district contest. Despite the quick turnaround, Southern Gap remained composed when Graham applied pressure and found a way to finish the match.
Kendall Brown provided a spark from the service line with four aces. She credited the Eagles’ success to the trust developed during a summer of preparation under coach Hannah Stiltner Lester.
“Even though we are a new team, Coach Lester had us in the gym all summer so now it feels like we have played together throughout our high school years,” Brown said. “I also think what led us to success against Graham was the way we refused to let each other get in our heads. When things got tough, we picked each other up, stayed focused and kept the momentum going. We trusted each other, and that’s what allowed us to finish strong.”
Leah Rasnake recorded 10 digs and eight kills, while Lucy Savage finished with seven kills. Madison Lester controlled the net with four blocks.
Adyson Bell distributed nine assists, and Bella Hurley added eight. Claire Griffey anchored the Eagles’ defense with 20 digs while contributing 10 service points.
Brown said years of offseason work in travel volleyball have helped her develop confidence behind the service line.
“I’ve also worked hard to improve my serving over the years through travel volleyball in the offseason,” Brown said. “The biggest difference now is that I trust myself. Every time I step behind the line, I have more confidence in what I can do, and I believe in my serve.”
The victory completed an impressive two-night stretch for Southern Gap, which moved to 2-0 in Southwest District play during its inaugural season.
