The Grundy Police Department handled 185 calls in August, including 22 outside the town limits, according to a report presented to Grundy Town Council on Sept. 8.
Police Chief Seth McGlothlin said 39 calls resulted in reportable incidents or investigations. Officers made 13 arrests, served 15 criminal papers and investigated two reportable motor vehicle crashes.
Officers also conducted 50 traffic stops that resulted in 39 summonses. McGlothlin said about a dozen of those summonses were connected to dirt bikes and should help address complaints the department has received.
McGlothlin also outlined upcoming professional development for the department. He will attend executive in-service training at Breaks Interstate Park.
Officer Dale will attend instructor development school from Sept. 28 through Oct. 5. McGlothlin and Dusty Childress will attend an accreditation training conference in Radford from Sept. 29 through Oct. 1.
In other business, Grundy Volunteer Fire Department Capt. Corey Vires updated council on the department’s August activities.
Vires said the department responded to 13 calls during the month, including six inside the town and seven outside the town limits.
The department also received a grant for a pallet of Gatorade valued at $2,100. The supplies were shared with the Grundy Police Department and the town shop.
Firefighters have worked with the Buchanan County Public Service Authority on a list of 23 hydrants needing attention. The department’s new fire trucks remained scheduled for delivery near the end of September.
Four department members passed Fire Instructor I testing administered Aug. 1, bringing the department’s total number of instructors to 11.
Vires said the department moved its regular training sessions to Sundays, allowing members with children to spend more time at home during the week.
Additional members were scheduled to attend training during September in areas including fire instruction, Firefighter I and II, hazardous materials and search-and-rescue operations.
