Students at each of Buchanan County’s four elementary-middle schools will again have opportunities to sample fresh fruits and vegetables during the 2026-27 school year.

The Buchanan County School Nutrition Department announced that all four schools will participate in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program.

The program introduces children to a variety of fresh, high-quality fruits and vegetables while teaching them about nutritious foods and healthy eating. Students will be offered taste-testing opportunities on multiple days each week.

School nutrition officials said the program is intended to encourage healthy habits, support students’ well-being and introduce children to new foods and flavors. Fresh food can also help students stay focused and prepared to learn.

For more information, contact Rhonda Musick at 276-935-4551, ext. 243, or [email protected]. Additional information is available from the Virginia Department of Education’s Office of School and Community Nutrition Programs at 804-418-4735.

Federal civil rights laws and U.S. Department of Agriculture regulations prohibit discrimination in USDA-funded or administered programs based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, marital status, family or parental status, income derived from a public assistance program, political beliefs, or reprisal or retaliation for previous civil rights activity. Not all prohibited bases apply to every program, and remedies and complaint-filing deadlines vary by program or incident.

People with disabilities who need program information in an alternative format, including Braille, large print, audiotape or American Sign Language, may contact the state or local agency administering the program or reach the USDA through the Telecommunications Relay Service by dialing 711. Information may also be available in languages other than English.

A discrimination complaint may be filed by completing USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form AD-3027, available online through the USDA’s “How to File a Program Discrimination Complaint” page or at any USDA office. You may also submit a letter containing all the information requested on the form.

You can request copies of the form by calling 866-632-9992. You may mail completed forms or letters to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, 1400 Independence Ave. SW, Mail Stop 9410, Washington, DC 20250-9410; or fax to 202-690-7442; or emailed to [email protected].
