Grundy Town Council and the Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce have approved plans for the Chamber’s annual Trunk or Treat celebration and found a new home for the Buchanan County Hall of Fame plaque.
Council approved two motions concerning Halloween during its Sept. 8 meeting.
The first established Saturday, Oct. 31, as the night Halloween will be observed in the Town of Grundy. Council member Bill Raines made the motion, and Council member Mike Lewis seconded it. The motion was approved unanimously.
Council then considered a request from Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Chad Cooper to close a portion of Walnut Street in downtown Grundy for Trunk or Treat.
Council member Rebecca Elkins made the motion to approve the event and allow Walnut Street to be closed from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Council member Patty Street seconded the motion, which also received unanimous approval.
The closure will extend from the corner of Walnut Street near the event area to the Grundy Post Office.
Cooper updated the Chamber’s board of directors on the council’s actions during the Chamber’s Sept. 10 meeting at its office on Walnut Street.
While the event is approved and ready to move forward, Cooper told board members that a large amount of candy will be needed. Organizers said Trunk or Treat could attract more than 800 children and families.
Chamber members discussed purchasing candy and asking local businesses, organizations and community members to make candy donations. Donations may be dropped off at the Chamber office. The Chamber will determine how much additional candy must be purchased after reviewing the donations it receives.
Local businesses, organizations and area residents are also invited to participate by setting up a decorated vehicle, table or booth and distributing candy during the countywide celebration.

The Chamber and council also acted on a proposed location for the Buchanan County Hall of Fame plaque.
The plaque originally was expected to be displayed in the Buchanan County Courthouse. However, County Administrator Craig Horn ruled out that location because items cannot be hung on the courthouse walls following the building’s renovations.
Cooper asked Town Council to allow the plaque to be displayed in the lobby of the Grundy Community Center theater.
The wooden plaque recognizes Hall of Fame members from across Buchanan County and weighs no more than 15 pounds. Council members discussed placing it on a wall near the theater entrance, where it would be visible to visitors.
Street made the motion to allow the plaque to be displayed in the Grundy Community Center. Raines seconded the motion, and council approved it unanimously.
During its Sept. 10 meeting, the Chamber board discussed the council-approved location and agreed that more people may see the plaque in the community center lobby. The Chamber board then voted unanimously to move forward with displaying the plaque at the theater.
