Buchanan County will receive nearly $400,000 in federal disaster relief funding to help cover debris removal costs associated with severe winter storms that struck Southwest Virginia in early 2025.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency awarded $389,310 to the Commonwealth of Virginia to support countywide debris removal operations in Buchanan County, U.S. Rep. Morgan Griffith announced Monday, Aug. 31.
“This FEMA grant for nearly $400,000 helps Buchanan County access federal disaster relief,” Griffith said.
The funding is tied to Virginia’s Major Disaster Declaration, which President Donald Trump approved in April 2025. Griffith said he pushed for federal approval of the declaration that Gov. Glenn Youngkin requested.
“Virginia’s Ninth District uses federal assistance to help communities recover from natural disaster damage, such as the damaging winter storms from early 2025,” Griffith said. “As the congressman for Southwest Virginia, I pushed for action at the federal level to approve Governor Youngkin’s Major Disaster Declaration.”
FEMA will provide the money to the Commonwealth of Virginia, which will distribute the funding to Buchanan County.
Griffith worked with U.S. Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner to secure federal approval of the disaster declaration.
The latest award follows $1.6 million in FEMA disaster relief funding that Griffith announced in June for Buchanan and Dickenson counties.
