When most people think of adult education classes, they typically associate the term with adults going back to school to earn a GED®. While this is true, adult education programs offer several other services to support adult learners in various areas.
Basic education and GED® classes are available, but programs also teach computer skills, build job readiness and financial awareness, and provide job training that leads to certifications. These include the Certified Nursing Assistant program and the SMAW Welder program.
Southwest Regional Adult Education offers many learning and training opportunities for adults throughout the region.
Earlier this year, adult learner James Goodman decided that, after being out of school for a few years, he needed to refresh his job skills to improve his chances of finding employment.
Goodman did not know exactly what to expect when he arrived at Ami Warner’s class at the Richlands Career Works Center, but he was motivated to get started. Once he began, it did not take him long to complete five courses in just one week.
Goodman completed two computer skills courses, NorthStar Digital Literacy and Computer Essentials. He also completed Job Essentials, Work Essentials and Money Essentials.
Goodman admitted that he was concerned that, after being out of school for a while, he might not remember some subjects very well. However, he did not give up when he faced challenges.
“I studied the practice tests and lessons each day and paid attention to the questions I got wrong and where I needed to improve until I passed each test,” Goodman said. “The programs were filled with examples for each subject and provided a way to relearn old subjects and grasp new ones.”
Goodman said he feels more confident because of the knowledge he gained. He also learned that “it’s never too late to get further education or to pursue help.”
Warner, who helped Goodman achieve his goal, said the programs prepare adult learners for the workplace and daily life.
“Like many young people, James needed training to develop the skills necessary to obtain and maintain a job,” Warner said. “Southwest Regional Adult Education provides these skills free of charge to anyone who enrolls in our programs. These programs develop the skills necessary for workplace readiness, managing money, and developing the computer skills required to meet societal demands.”
