The Buchanan County Board of Supervisors approved more than $140,000 in invoices related to the county’s coal haul program during its Aug. 3 meeting at the Buchanan County Government Center on Slate Creek.
Buchanan County Coal Haul Road Engineer Marcus Stiltner presented the requests and updated supervisors on the program’s finances and ongoing projects.
The first request was for Invoice No. 168, totaling $82,107.06, from the Virginia Department of Transportation. North Grundy supervisor Lee Dotson moved to approve the invoice, and Rocklick supervisor Craig Stiltner seconded.
The board approved the payment unanimously.
Supervisors also approved a $58,425 invoice for work connected to an extension project on Ruffed Grouse Lane involving the new Southern Gap High School. The county will seek reimbursement for that expense through previously appropriated funds.
Dotson made the motion to approve the second invoice, and Garden District Supervisor Jeff Cooper seconded it. The motion passed unanimously.
Together, the two invoices totaled $140,532.60.
Marcus Stiltner also discussed appointments and reappointments connected to the coal haul board. Supervisors were told that Jimmy Griffey no longer wished to serve, while Stacy Harris was interested in continuing. Stiltner also informed the board that Coronado Coal engineer Paul Welch would be willing to serve on the board. The board unanimously approved Harris and Welch to be recommended for the appointments.
The board also approved a budget amendment and additional appropriation for fiscal year 2026-27.
The final request presented was Payment Request No. 1 from the Buchanan County Public Service Authority for $89,512. The payment will come from an account designated for the project.
Dotson moved to approve the PSA payment, and Craig Stilner seconded.
Prater supervisor David Rose and Hurricane supervisor and board chairman Tim Hess abstained because both are PSA employees. The remaining supervisors approved the request.
