Blue skies, warm weather and a shared sense of community helped make National Night Out a successful evening in downtown Grundy.
Families and residents gathered Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the Grundy Town Center, where they had an opportunity to meet local law enforcement officers, firefighters and community service providers outside of their usual working environments.
The event was held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and centered on a simple goal: bringing the people who serve the community closer to those who call it home.
Representatives from the Grundy Police Department, Virginia State Police, Grundy Fire Department, District 43 Probation, Buchanan County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and People Inc. were among those taking part.
The pleasant weather provided a welcoming setting as residents visited with representatives from the participating agencies and learned more about the services they provide. Children and adults alike had an opportunity to speak with officers and first responders, ask questions and become more familiar with the people working throughout the community.
For many children, the evening offered a chance to meet police officers and firefighters in a friendly and relaxed setting. For adults, it provided an opportunity to connect with local agencies and learn more about the resources available in Buchanan County.
National Night Out is observed in communities across the country to strengthen relationships between residents, law enforcement agencies and first responders. The annual event also encourages neighbors to get to know one another and work together to create safer communities.
Those goals came to life in Grundy as residents and public servants spent the evening talking, sharing information and building connections.
The event also gave officers and first responders an opportunity to step away from the difficult situations residents often encounter and spend time with the community they serve.
