Residents of Buchanan County and the surrounding region struggling with substance use disorder will soon have access to another treatment option close to home.
Wildwood Recovery Center, a new 112-bed residential substance use disorder treatment facility in neighboring Dickenson County, is scheduled to begin accepting patients on Sept. 28. Located at 230 Chip Mill Road near Clintwood, the center is expected to serve individuals from across Southwest Virginia, including Buchanan County.
Operated by Momentum Management Solutions, Wildwood will provide clinically managed, high-intensity residential treatment for both men and women. Officials said treatment plans and the length of each patient’s stay will be based on individual needs, with plans to expand services by adding lower levels of care in the future.
“We have been working toward this day for a long time, and we are proud to open Wildwood’s doors to the individuals and families of Southwest Virginia who need it most,” said Matt Boggs, chief financial officer and chief operating officer of Momentum Management Solutions. “This community has waited patiently, and we are honored to begin this work alongside so many dedicated local partners.”
The recovery center is expected to employ more than 50 people once fully operational. Hiring is already underway for a variety of positions, including care specialists and support staff, with officials giving preference to local applicants from Dickenson County. Tyler Jordan recently was named the facility’s administrator.
The project has been years in the making. Wildwood was first announced in January 2023 through a partnership involving Dickenson County, the Industrial Development Authority of Dickenson County and Southwest Properties to help address the region’s ongoing substance use and overdose crisis. Momentum Management Solutions assumed operation of the facility in October 2025.
The center received financial support from several organizations, including the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority, Virginia Small Business Financing Authority, Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority, Rapha Foundation and the Anne and Gene Worrell Foundation.
Dickenson County Director of Economic Development Dana Cronkhite said the opening represents years of planning and collaboration.
“Projects like this don’t happen overnight,” Cronkhite said. “They take vision, persistence, and a community willing to stay the course. Today is an exciting reminder that when we continue moving forward, even through the challenges, we can create opportunities that will benefit Dickenson County for generations to come.”
Officials said Wildwood will work alongside existing community organizations and recovery programs to provide clients with additional support services during and after treatment, creating what county leaders have described as an “ecosystem for recovery.”
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and community tour will be held before the Sept. 28 opening. Officials said details will be announced in the coming weeks.
The opening gives residents throughout Southwest Virginia, including those in Buchanan County, another nearby option for residential treatment as communities across the region continue working to combat addiction and expand access to recovery services.
