Mountain Mission School is happy to announce the appointment of its Director of Education Mr. James M. Swiney, as field supervisor for the Divinity School, Vanderbilt University. This appointment while allowing Mr. Swiney to continue his duties with the Mountain Mission staff, also bestows upon him the title and duties of Adjunct Member of the Faculty of Vanderbilt.
U.S. Army, Vietnam (AHTNC) July 8 – Army Specialist Four Leon H. Woods, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Woods, Route 1, Vansant, recently received the Combat Infantryman Badge and was promoted to his present rank in Vietnam. The badge is a unique and cherished award that is highly coveted by its recipients.

Miss Veronica Belcher, a rising senior at Grundy Senior High School has been named to “Who’s Who among American high school students, 1980-81. Miss Belcher has been singing for audiences since childhood and has performed at numerous local and area events. She has also appeared on TV and has recorded several albums. Veronica is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rondal Belcher of Big Rock. Her maternal grandparents, Rev and Mrs. Arville Collins, also live at Big Rock.
Two Grundy Senior High School seniors were among the 70 to receive certificates of completion of the King Fellow program held at King College in Bristol. Tammy Denise Deel and Elliot Stewert both earned certificates for the satisfactory completion of the summer five-week honors program for outstanding rising high school seniors. In addition to earning academic credit for their college level courses, King Fellows also participate in a variety of workshops and social and cultural events.

Ruby Kirby was named the new principal at Whitewood High School during a continued meeting of the Buchanan County School Board last Thursday. Kirby, who has been assistant principal at Garden High School, was selected for the post after being recommended by Superintendent Paul Hatfield following a lengthy two-hour closed-door session.
The Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce was the winner of the Clean Business Award for July. Chamber of Commerce Secretary Mary McClanahan said the chamber appreciated the town of Grundy’s efforts in maintaining the chamber’s lawn and garden. Those on hand for the presentation included Chamber of Commerce president Oliver L. Upchurch; McClanahan; Town of Grundy Mayor Miller Richardson; Buchanan County Little Control Coordinator Marie Sexton; Flo Stewert; and Chamber of Commerce First Vice President Raymond L. Board.

Rebecca L. Shortridge has been elected as Assistant Vice President of First Virginia Bank Southwest. Announcement of the promotion was made by Charles W. Robbins, III, chairman and CEO. Shortridge joined First Virginia Bank Southwest in November of 1991, bringing with her over 13 years of previous financial experience. She began her career as a ‘clerk and quickly worked her way through the credit system, reaching her current position as Commercial Account Officer, located in the Richlands Downtown Office.
Amanda O’Quinn and Jonathan Hess, who will be juniors at Council High School this fall, have been selected to attend the High School Leadership Academy to be held July 29-Aug. 3 at Bridgewater College. O’Quinn is the daughter of Jeff Hess, the son of Gregory Allen and Wanda F. Hess of Honaker. Both students were nominated by Edna Sue Breeding, counselor at Council High School.
