Residents will have an opportunity this Thursday to learn how to better prepare their families for emergencies during a free disaster preparedness workshop at Southwest Virginia Community College’s Southern Gap Transportation and Logistics Center (SGTLC).
The event, hosted by Southwest Virginia Community College in partnership with United Way of Southwest Virginia and the United Recovery Force Disaster Division, is scheduled from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at SGTLC, located at 1102 Ovenbird Road in Grundy.
The free, hands-on training session is designed to help individuals and families prepare for emergencies by teaching practical disaster preparedness skills and safety measures. Organizers said participants will learn easy-to-follow steps they can use before, during and after natural disasters and other emergency situations.
In addition to the training, each family attending the workshop will receive one free disaster preparedness bucket filled with emergency preparedness supplies.
The workshop is part of an ongoing effort by Southwest Virginia Community College and the United Recovery Force to strengthen disaster readiness across Southwest Virginia by providing communities with the knowledge and basic resources needed to respond to emergencies.
Officials encourage residents of all ages to attend, noting that no previous emergency preparedness experience is necessary. The event is free and open to the public.
