As excitement continues to build for the opening of Southern Gap High School, the school’s competition cheer program invites students to take their first step toward joining the Eagles’ inaugural squad.
Southern Gap High School will host a Competition Cheer Open Gym on Monday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Buchanan County YMCA. The session is open to students entering grades 8-12 for the 2026-27 school year.
Coaches encourage anyone interested in competition cheer to attend, regardless of experience. The open gym is designed to introduce students to the program while allowing them to begin conditioning and learn the fundamentals of jumps, stunts and tumbling.
Organizers said all skill levels are welcome, making the event an opportunity for both experienced cheerleaders and those looking to try the sport for the first time.
The open gym comes as Southern Gap High School prepares for its inaugural athletic season this fall. The competition cheer team will be among the school’s first athletic programs, joining the Eagles as they begin a new chapter in Buchanan County athletics.
Participants are encouraged to bring plenty of energy, a positive attitude and a willingness to learn as coaches begin laying the foundation for the program’s first season.
Students planning to attend should arrive a few minutes early and wear comfortable athletic clothing and appropriate shoes for physical activity.
