The summer heat didn’t keep the crowds away last Friday as families from across Buchanan County packed downtown Grundy for an evening of music, fireworks and hometown fellowship during the community’s annual Independence Day celebration.
This year’s celebration carried extra meaning as residents not only celebrated the nation’s Independence Day, but also recognized America’s upcoming 250th anniversary and Buchanan County’s 150th anniversary.
Earlier in the afternoon, families gathered outside the Grundy Community Center for the annual Big Wheel Bash hosted by the Grundy Fire Department. Despite temperatures climbing into the 90s, children eagerly explored fire trucks, ambulances, police cruisers, coal trucks, tow trucks and other heavy equipment while meeting the men and women who operate them. Parents and grandparents watched as youngsters climbed inside the vehicles, sounded horns and learned more about the equipment that serves their community.
As the evening progressed, crowds filled the Grundy Town Center for the annual celebration, with lawn chairs lining the streets as families settled in for entertainment.
Blue Reign took the stage and quickly engaged the audience, performing a variety of songs that kept the crowd entertained as they waited for nightfall. The band’s energetic performance helped create a festive atmosphere as neighbors visited with one another and children played nearby.
When darkness finally arrived, all eyes turned toward the sky as the annual fireworks display began. Brilliant colors lit up the mountains surrounding Grundy, drawing smiles, cheers and excitement from spectators throughout the show.
The loudest reaction came after the grand finale, when the final burst of fireworks echoed through the valley, and the crowd responded with a thunderous round of applause in appreciation of another memorable display.
