As public concern continues to grow over an alleged assault involving a juvenile at a gathering on Blackthorn Road, Buchanan County Sheriff Allen Boyd is asking residents to allow investigators to follow the evidence as the case continues.
The incident has generated widespread attention on social media, where hundreds of comments and posts have called for justice for the victim while questioning the status of the investigation.
In a public statement released on June 23, Boyd acknowledged both the public interest and the seriousness of the allegations.
“The Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office is aware of concerns and social media posts regarding an incident at a gathering on Blackthorn Road in the Rockhouse Mountain section of the county. We understand the seriousness of the allegations and the concern expressed by those involved and the community.”
Boyd said while social media has brought attention to the case, investigators must base their decisions on evidence rather than public opinion.
“While social media can bring attention to an incident, investigations cannot be based on online allegations alone. Law enforcement must rely on evidence, witness interviews, medical information when applicable, digital evidence, and facts that can be independently verified.”
According to Boyd, investigators are reviewing witness statements and available evidence before determining whether criminal charges are appropriate.
He also noted that allegations stemming from gatherings where alcohol or other impairing substances may have been involved require investigators to carefully evaluate witness accounts.
“When allegations involve gatherings where alcohol or other impairing substances may have been involved, investigators must carefully evaluate the reliability and consistency of all witness accounts. Intoxication does not automatically discredit a witness, but it can affect perception, memory, and recollection. Statements must be compared against physical evidence, video, and other investigative findings.”
Boyd said responsibility for any criminal acts will be determined through the investigative process rather than public speculation.
“Responsibility and accountability are determined through the investigative process and based on each individual’s actions—not assumptions or social media narratives.”
The sheriff’s statement also addressed advertisements circulating online promoting another party scheduled for June 27 on Compton Mountain Road.
“Additionally, a new advertisement promoting another party scheduled for June 27, 2026, on Compton Mountain Road has recently surfaced. Similar to previous advertisements, it contains the statement that ‘cops won’t show up.’ I want to make it clear that law enforcement will be present and will respond appropriately to any violations of the law.”
Boyd added that the property’s owners have informed the Sheriff’s Office the location is private property and warned that individuals entering or remaining there without permission could face trespassing charges.
“The property owners have advised that this is private property and have stated that individuals who enter or remain on the property without permission will be considered trespassers. Anyone found violating the law, including trespassing, may be subject to enforcement action as provided by Virginia law.”
The Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone with firsthand knowledge of the Blackthorn Road incident to contact investigators directly.
“Anyone with firsthand knowledge, video footage, photographs, or other relevant information regarding the Blackthorn Road incident is encouraged to contact the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office directly at rather than relying solely on public discussion.”
Boyd concluded the statement by reaffirming the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to conducting a thorough investigation.
“Our responsibility is to follow the evidence wherever it leads and ensure any investigation is handled fairly, thoroughly, and within the law.”
As of press time, no arrests or criminal charges related to the Blackthorn Road incident had been announced by the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office, and the investigation remains ongoing.
