Early rain cleared in time Saturday night for the annual Knox Creek Volunteer Fire Department Independence Day celebration at the Hurley track, where families gathered for an evening of music, local food vendors and fireworks.
The communitywide event brought residents together to celebrate the holiday weekend and, for many, served as one of the area’s signature summer traditions. As the evening went on, the fireworks show became the highlight of the night, drawing cheers from the crowd as bursts of color lit up the sky over Hurley.
Jaklyn Lane, a Knox Creek resident attending the event for the first time, said the show exceeded expectations.
“This was the first time that I have attended the Independence Day fireworks at the Hurley Middle School, and I have to say, I wasn’t expecting such an awesome show,” Lane said. “Whoever put this beautiful show together did an awesome job. It was very organized and never a dark moment in Hurley, Va. tonight for 30 solid minutes, Hurley lit up the skies. Between a few Rebel squeals and the smoke, it made my night to see the kids smiling and enjoying what little we have left in our community. Again, congratulations on a well-organized event.”
The celebration offered a festive start to the holiday weekend and a chance for neighbors across the area to gather in a family-friendly setting.
