At a meeting last Thursday afternoon, Llewellyn Shortridge was elected president of the Grundy Business and Professional Association for the new year. Other officers selected were Claude Davis, vice-president and Pailine Tylender, secretary.
Miss Patricia Ann Smith was first runner-up in the Miss Clinch Valley Bathing Beauty Contest, held Saturday night, June 5th. Miss Smith, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Smith of Hurley, is a 1979 graduate of Hurley High School and is currently attending East Tennessee State University.

Shirley Belcher of Buchanan County was recently elected to the Tech Advisory Council. During their most recent triennial meeting in Virginia Beach, the Advisory Council to the Center for Volunteer Development at Virginia Tech elected Rusty Erkin (chairman), Botetourt County; Dorothy Blanchard (vice chairman), Blacksburg; and Belcher, secretary-treasurer, from Buchanan County.
Recently named to the board of directors of the Mountain Paradise Rest Home, Leonard Keen of Whitewood. Keen is an employee of the Jewell Smokeless Coal Company. He will serve on the board at the facility, which serves disabled and elderly adults and is licensed for 19 residents.

Grundy Town Council members are pursuing a plan to cut parking spaces at the Grundy Parking Building in order to construct a movie theatre, according to a surprise announcement made Thursday during the Town Council meeting. Council member Ed Bunn told other council members that he had been working for some time with the Virginia Department of Transportation to turn the third floor of the Grundy parking garage into a town-operated theater.
William D. Kilgore Jr., of Grundy, was presented with the Distinguished Mining Alumni Award by the Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering at Virginia Tech. The presentation was delivered at the AMC Mining Convention earlier this month in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The foursome of Joe Addison, Glen Turner, Ken Potter and Hassell Wooldridge walked away with the championship flight trophy last Friday evening as they took top honors in the third annual Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce golf tournament held at Willowbrook Country Club. A total of 88 golfers — 22 four-man teams — made up the field for this year’s event.
The 12th annual YMCA Co-ed Summer Basketball Camp, conducted by Grundy High School head girls’ basketball coach Leslie Horne and several assistants, saw 70 athletes take part in this year’s camp. The camp also recognized and awarded campers of the day and a camper of the week. The Camper of the Week award went to Bobby Peck, a rising fifth grader at Riverview Elementary. Bobby, the son of David and Selena Peck, won a one-year student membership to the YMCA for his efforts.
