The Grundy Town Council unanimously approved the town’s fiscal year 2026-27 budget during its June 9 meeting at the Town Office in the Grundy Plaza.
The approved balanced budget totals $2,050,717.76 in both projected revenues and expenditures and provides funding for town administration, public safety, street maintenance and sanitation services for the upcoming fiscal year.
Prior to the council meeting, a public hearing was held to receive comments on the proposed budget. No residents were present to speak during the hearing.
Later in the meeting, Mayor Chris Mitchell called for a motion to approve the budget. Council member Rebecca Elkins made the motion, which was seconded by Council member Taylor Burgess. The budget was approved unanimously by council members in attendance.
Administrative expenditures represent the largest portion of the budget at $859,433.76. The street department is budgeted to receive $475,650, while the police department is allocated $450,868. Funding also includes $152,848 for the fire department and $111,918 for the garbage department.
The town anticipates several major revenue sources during the coming fiscal year. Bank stock tax revenue is projected at $550,000, while food tax collections are expected to generate $450,000. Real estate taxes are estimated at $160,000, and lodging tax revenue is projected at $110,000.
Additional revenue projections include $100,000 in business license revenue, $100,000 in donations and $95,000 in sales tax revenue. The budget also anticipates $82,000 in garbage fees, $75,000 in interest income, $60,000 each from CAM income and personal property tax collections, and $32,417 from a law enforcement grant.
Other anticipated revenue sources include county fire protection funding, DMV and fire program grants, utility and communications taxes, fuel tax refunds, festival revenue, Virginia Department of Transportation snow removal reimbursement and various fees and reimbursements.
The budget will take effect at the start of the town’s new fiscal year on July 1.
