Buchanan County residents will have an opportunity to clear out unwanted household chemicals, old electronics and tires during a collection event Friday, Oct. 30, in Grundy.
The household hazardous waste collection, office paper and tire drop-off will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Walmart parking lot. Buchanan County and the Cumberland Plateau Regional Waste Management Authority are sponsoring the event.
The collection offers residents a way to dispose of products that may have been sitting in garages, basements or cabinets for years. Organizers noted that improper disposal of hazardous household materials can endanger people and animals and pollute creeks, streams and wooded areas.
Accepted items include paint, polishes, varnishes, paint-related materials, turpentine, aerosol cans, adhesives, antifreeze, fuel additives, gasoline, mercury, pesticides, transmission fluid, bleach and pool chemicals.
Nickel-cadmium, alkaline and dry-cell batteries also will be accepted, along with electronics, office paper and tires.
Commercial and industrial waste, radioactive materials, explosives, bullets and all tank cylinders will not be accepted.
Organizers ask residents to take used motor oil to Advance Auto or another designated recycling location rather than bringing it to the collection event.
Residents with questions about accepted materials or the collection can contact the Buchanan County Litter Control Office at 276-935-6106.
