Buchanan County area Girl Scouts, with leaders Mrs. Johnny Shortridge of Deel and Mrs. George Stewert of Grundy in charge, will be the guests of local civic clubs for special programs during the next few weeks. The first of the series of these programs was done on Thursday, September 23, 1971, for the Grundy Lions Club.
Mrs. Lynda Griffith recently received a B.S. degree in Biology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University with minors in Chemistry and math. Lynda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Null of Rowe and a 1968 graduate of Garden High School.

The Buchanan County YMCA Community Chorus is being organized under the direction of Kemper Bausell and will meet this Monday, October 4, 1976, in the band room of Grundy Senior High School.
Registration will be held at two locations during the first week of October for a Bridge course taught by Sam Beinhorn of Grundy, a Life Master in Bridge. Interested people may register at Southwest Virginia Community College at 6:30 p.m. on October 12, or in Grundy at 7 p.m. on October 7.

Carl Coleman, a sophomore from Grundy, is a member of the Milligan College cross country team, according to head coach Lee Morrow. Matching last year’s 8-2 record will challenge the young 1981 team, but coach Morrow is optimistic. Carl attends Mountain Mission School in Grundy.
Dale Blankenship, a 17-year-old senior, was named Athlete of the Week at Garden High School for outstanding play, with eight solo tackles and 13 assists in recent gridiron action. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L.D. Blankenship of Rowe.

Sean Stiltner notched his first cross country win last week. The Grundy junior then took advantage of his only home-course meet to make it two in a row, edging Twin Valley standout Jon Baker by 10 seconds to claim top individual honors Monday afternoon at the Enoch’s Branch course near Grundy. In claiming his first meet, Stiltner also won the individual honors at the Camp Bethel course in Wise during a 10-team meet last Wednesday (Sept. 26).
Senior posts Kayla Thomas and Vanessa Compton each posted a double-double on Thursday, and Council completed a two-game sweep of a Buchanan County rival on Tuesday as the Lady Cobras won a pair of games last week. Council opened Black Diamond District play with a 73-50 win over Hurley Thursday night at Hurley Middle School. Jayme Presley hit two free throws with 3.2 seconds remaining last Tuesday (September 25), as the Lady Cobras notched their second win of the year over Grundy, 52-50. Against Hurley, Thomas scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds — eight on the offensive end, and Compton added 13 points and a dozen boards for the Cobras. Four players scored in double figures for Council (6-5). Presley scored 19 points, and Nikki Gillispie added 14 points and nine assists for the Lady Cobras. Senior center Amelia Thomas led three scorers in double figures with 18 points for Hurley (3-7).
