Nearly two weeks after authorities began searching for a man who gained national attention for surviving Hurricane Helene on Georgia’s Tybee Island, officials say the investigation into his disappearance remains active.
Scotty Scarberry, known to many as “Huck Finn,” has still not been located, and the Kentucky State Police continue to investigate his disappearance.
Scarberry was reported missing after family members said he planned to travel into Southwest Virginia to explore abandoned mines. Earlier this month, the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office confirmed deputies requested assistance from the Virginia Department of Energy’s Mines Rescue Team after receiving information that Scarberry may have entered an abandoned mine in the Paw Paw section of Buchanan County.
The mine entrance was excavated by the rescue team, but authorities reported finding no sign of Scarberry.
Kentucky State Police are now asking anyone with information about Scarberry’s whereabouts to come forward.

Scarberry gained national attention in September 2024 after he and his dog, Creedy, survived Hurricane Helene while living aboard a sailboat near Tybee Island, Georgia. The pair washed ashore near U.S. Highway 80 during the storm, and national news outlets across the country shared their remarkable survival story.
According to previous reports, Scarberry later left Tybee Island and traveled to Kentucky, where he had been staying on his uncle’s property. Family members said he told relatives he planned to explore abandoned mines in Virginia before he disappeared.
His family has expressed growing concern, noting that Scarberry left behind his dog, Creedy, something they said would be out of character if he intended to be away for an extended period.
Authorities have not released any additional information about the investigation. Anyone who may have seen Scarberry or has information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact Kentucky State Police Post 9.
