Blake Compton, who was a stellar lineman for Grundy High in the early 1960s, was named head football coach at Grundy Junior High this week. The announcement was made by County Supt. Don Bevins and Principal John Meade. Compton succeeds Carl Pennington, who resigned to continue studies toward his master’s degree.
Employment of a band director for Grundy Senior High School was announced this week by County School Supt. Don Bevins. He is Mr. Manuel Arellano, who has served as choral director at Grundy Methodist Church for the past several years. Mr. Arellano succeeds Bill Cook, who resigned to become band director of R.B. Worthy High at Saltville.

A Grundy native, Dr. Eloise Elizabeth Clark, has been nominated by President Gerald Ford to be assistant director of the National Science Foundation, according to news reports from Washington. Dr. Clark is the youngest daughter of the late Dr. Frank E. Clark, founder of the Grundy Presbyterian School and a leader in establishing the Presbyterian churches in the county.
The Cincinnati Reds were not the only winners at New River Stadium Saturday night. A 13-year-old Grundy boy, attending the Reds-Montreal game with a YMCA group from this county, was the winner of $100 worth of ice cream given away by the Reds following their successful game. Randy Childress was among 29 boys and girls from this county on a YMCA weekend excursion to Cincinnati, and the ball game was among the highlights of the trip.

Bobby Aaron Deel, a rising junior at Grundy High School, has been named to Who’s Who among American High School students. His biography will appear in the late fall edition. He is the son of Stacy and Kim Deel of Russell Prater.
Winning a state title as a sophomore, Luke Owens had already made his mark as a wrestling standout among Virginia grapplers. In North Dakota, he stood out like a man among men, only this time on the National stage. Owens earned All-American status in both freestyle and Greco-Roman competition at the Junior Nationals Championships, July 6-14 at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D.

Continued to make administrative post reassignments this week, taking action Monday afternoon to fill a total of four vacant principal and assistant principal positions. Following an hour-long closed session called to discuss the assignment and transfer of various school personnel, members of the board voted unanimously to name Connie Childress principal of Russell Prater Elementary School and Ron Epling principal of J.M. Bevins Elementary School.
The younger guns came with all they had, but the veteran dodged all the obstacles. Bob Fuller of Grundy, at age 73, used his consistent style of play — dodged the obstacles of the course — and captured Willowbrook Country Club’s men’s club championship title this past weekend at WCC.
