Buchanan County Sheriff’s deputies will soon begin wearing body cameras, marking a significant step toward increasing transparency, accountability and public safety across the county.
Sheriff Allen W. Boyd announced this week that the Buchanan County Sheriff’s Office has purchased body-worn cameras for its deputies. The cameras will be phased into service over the coming months as deputies complete training, equipment is installed and departmental policies and procedures are finalized.
The new technology will provide deputies with the ability to record law enforcement interactions, creating an objective record that can assist criminal investigations, support court proceedings and help resolve citizen complaints.
“The addition of body-worn cameras is an important investment in public safety and reflects our continued commitment to transparency, accountability, and professionalism,” Boyd said. “The cameras will provide an objective record of law enforcement interactions, assist with criminal investigations and prosecutions, help resolve citizen complaints, and document the professional service our deputies provide to the citizens of Buchanan County each day.”
Body-worn cameras have become increasingly common among law enforcement agencies across Virginia and the nation, serving as an additional tool to document encounters between deputies and the public.
Boyd said the purchase was made possible through careful financial planning within the Sheriff’s Office.
“This project was made possible largely through taxpayer dollars that were available because of responsible budgeting and careful management of Sheriff’s Office resources,” Boyd said. “We believe it is important to make sound financial decisions while continuing to invest in equipment and technology that benefits both our deputies and the community we serve.”
The sheriff also credited the continued support of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for helping make the project possible.
“I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors for their continued support of the Sheriff’s Office and their commitment to public safety,” Boyd said. “Their cooperation and partnership were instrumental in making this project possible.”
Boyd also thanked Buchanan County Commonwealth’s Attorney Nikki Stiltner for her assistance during the process.

Stiltner said the addition of body cameras will benefit both law enforcement officers and the public by providing an accurate record of interactions.
“Body-worn cameras are an important tool that strengthens both public trust and the integrity of our criminal justice system,” Stiltner said. “They provide an objective record of interactions that can protect both citizens and law enforcement officers, improve the quality of evidence presented in court, and enhance accountability across the board.”
She said the cameras will also assist prosecutors in preparing criminal cases.
“As Commonwealth’s Attorney, I appreciate the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to professionalism and transparency,” Stiltner said. “The implementation of this program will not only support our deputies in the field but will also greatly assist our office in reviewing cases and presenting clear, reliable evidence in court.”
Stiltner praised Boyd for making the investment and thanked county leaders for supporting the initiative.
“I commend Sheriff Boyd for his leadership in bringing this important technology to Buchanan County, and I appreciate the support of the Board of Supervisors in helping make this investment possible,” she said. “This is a positive step forward for public safety and for the continued confidence our citizens place in their local law enforcement.”
The Sheriff’s Office expects the cameras to be implemented over the next several months as deputies complete the necessary training and the department finalizes procedures governing their use.
Boyd said the investment reflects the department’s ongoing mission to serve the community while equipping deputies with modern tools to perform their duties.
